Welcome to the Lions Club
of Carlingford – Dundas

We are a group of people who are dedicated to making our community a better place. With like-minded people we provide real change and create opportunities in our community. We make things happen.

We aim to meet the needs of our local community by providing community service. We believe community is what we make it.
When you join Lions, you join a global service network. So, at the same time you’re doing local community service, you can also contribute to Lions volunteer efforts around the world.

Cooking for the Nurses

Every few months we cook dinner for the NSW Nurses and Mid Wives Association (https://www.facebook.com/nswnma/).

From the money raised we are able to support the Nurses Scholarship Foundation (http://www.nswnma.asn.au/the-lions-nurses-scholarship-information) . The scholarship allows nurses to further their education and we all benefit from this.

Thanks to the Lions that volunteer their time in making this happen.

Our September 2018 guest speakers were Syd and Heather Bell from the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club (AMLC - https://amlc.org.au/). This is a club that holds its meetings over the internet because its members are out travelling around Australia. Browse their internet page to see some of the great projects they have been involved with and ones that they have coming up.

Lions Club of Carlingford-Dundas

Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition

A public speaking competition which aims to encourage school students from Years 7 and/or 8 in the local area to develop confidence and experience in public forums has been conducted by the Lions Club of Carlingford-Dundas annually since 2011. The Lions Club was very grateful to OLMC, Parramatta which provided the venue and refreshments for the 2018 competition held on Thursday, 16 August.

Thirteen students presented from Catherine McAuley Westmead, Cumberland High School, Normanhurst Boys High School, OLMC Parramatta, Parramatta Marist, Redeemer Baptist School and TARA Anglican School for Girls.

Competition is usually very tight and this year's was no exception. Both the Winner, Cristobal Corvalan Sotomayor from Parramatta Marist, Westmead and the Runner-Up, Aiza Reshty from Catherine McAuley, Westmead were Year 7 students and came from the same campus.

The Club is very appreciative of TARA which has offered to host the 2019 competition, thus returning to where it all began in 2011.

In 1925 Helen Keller challenged Lions to be Knights
for the Blind. Today, Carlingford-Dundas Lions we’re privileged to visit the Lions NSW Eye Bank to see how that challenge is being met in 2018. The Lions NSW Eye Bank is now part of the NSW Organ & Tissue Donation Service, together with the NSW Bone Bank and the Australian Ocular Biobank. The results already achieved and the promise of things to come through research are difficult to comprehend In NSW today there is effectively no waiting list for corneal transplants or repair- technology allows sufficient donated corneas to be stored to meet demand! Parts of the eye that can’t be transplanted eg retina, are used for extraordinary research. Did you know that femur heads can be donated by persons who have had hip replacement, and the bone reused? Skin can be donated and used to treat burns and other traumas. Mothers electing to have a caesarean birth can donate the amnion which can be used in eye surgery and other open wound covering. Excuse the pun, but the visit to the Lions NSW Eye Bank was a real eye-opener.
A single person, you, me, pretty much anybody, has within them, the capacity to directly impact the life of up to 70 others. DONATE LIFE !
Thank you Pierre Georges, Tissue Donor Coordinator.

Harmony Day is an annual event to highlight the problem of racial discrimination. Our wonderful Cumberland High School Leos adopted and expanded this theme to include an anti bullying awareness in their school. Congratulations Leos. Job well done.
