Camp Lionheart is an initiative of the Kids Rehab Department of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and is a joint project with the Lions Club of Carlingford-Dundas.Camp Lionheart Logo

Initially, the Camp’s aim was to address the recreation and respite needs of children with an acquired brain injury. The Camp now includes other children, as assessed by the Kids Rehab team, who would benefit from the fun, education and social support that the Camp experience can provide.

Since the project began in 2003, the Lions Club has raised over $340,000 to fund the annual Camp and its associated development activities.

In recent years, Camp Lionheart has been held at Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen. In 2013, children between the ages of 7 and 13 years, Kids Rehab staff members and volunteers attended the Camp which has now become an adventure the children will never forget and includes a weekend of activities in which they usually cannot participate due to their disabilities.

camp lionheart canoeingLast year, a great highlight was sailing with Sailability at Manly Yacht Club. The children were hoisted out of their wheelchairs and placed into the sailboats where most had never experienced this feeling of freedom before. One child even saw a sting ray. Another great highlight was the CSIRO Science show, where the children were able to participate in some great experiments, including the making of ice-cream with liquid nitrogen and then eating it!

Other activities included wheelchair basketball, swimming, archery, and messy art and craft sessions.camp lionheart basketball

Once again in the Garden Suite of the beautifully refurbished Oatlands House, the 2012 Camp Lionheart Dinner was another financial success and, once again also, despite the difficulties encountered by the Committee in another very tough economic climate.  More on the financial results later.

The general consensus, however, was that this year’s Dinner was the best yet from the social angle.  We decided to move on this year from the sports celebrity guest speaker with a motivational or entertaining presentation. This had worked well for a number of years, but it was time to see what else might work.

Firstly, because it was Dr Stephen O’Flaherty’s last Dinner while still Head of Kids Rehab, everyone was issued with a Bandaged Bear bow-tie just (BBBT), compliments of Royale Corp, just so we could all empathise with him in his usual dress code.  His appearance in an ordinary tie was soon rectified when he donned the BBBT on arrival at his table.

IMGP7084IMGP7088The hit of the evening was Mario Lasagne – the Singing Chef.  His short but highly entertaining spot had everyone joining in on those classical Italian evergreens of “That’s Amore”, “Volare” etc, concluding with an excellent rendition of “Nessun Dorma”.  He was even spotted serenading the soon-to-be-elected 2nd Vice District Governor, Joanne Sim, as well as our own Halina.

We tried with a “Roaring 20s” theme on the night in view of the recently completed filming of “The Great Gatsby” here in Sydney.  So, we hired a jazz band – Jazz Fever.  However, this was not the success we had hoped for as the dance floor was devoid for most of the night of passionate dancers.  Still, there were some who burn the floor (7095).  And, there were others who did enter in to the spirit of the Roaring 20s.

IMGP7097IMGP7096Another highlight of the night was the short speech on Camp Lionheart experiences delivered by Ernest Brinas, supported by his mother, Esther.  Both were later interviewed by Dr Steve.

We welcomed a couple of new table sponsors in 2012 and, hopefully, they will come on board again in 2013.  They were SUPERCAR d’elegance and REGAL Dry Cleaners.  Both tables provided very generous support of both Open and Silent Auctions.  Tom Issa, the Managing Director of SUPERCAR d’elegance bought the 2012 AFL Premiers Sydney Swans autographed guernsey  and David & Bambi Mares owners of REGAL Dry Cleaners bought the pair of Howard Ireland paintings. We appreciate their support.  The Pat Rafter autographed shirt was picked up by Anthony Milton from the NAB which has been a supporter since Day 1 back in 2003.

All 78 Silent Auction items were sold and there were some real bargains snapped up.  The net proceeds from Auctions were approx $10,900.  The raffle, with the main prize being an Apple 13-inch MacBook Air 256GB provided very generously by an anonymous donor, netted $3,140.   While the net proceeds ($32,633) were less than last year, it was still a great result.  And we did it without the presence of Chairman Geoff and President David, both of whom chose to “vacate the kitchen because of the heat”.
